No two people want exactly the same thing from their professional life. No two candidates offer exactly the same balance of technical and professional skills. And no two employers offer exactly the same opportunities, journey and experience.
So why do all the recruiters in the ecology and arb sector resort to e-blasting your anonymised CV out to as many employers as they can, accompanied by a bit of template text and their terms? The answer is obvious, really. They have one goal – get paid and move on to the next.
Unsurprisingly, this doesn’t add value for employers, because other than serving as a CV database the recruiter does very little work and charges a lot of money.
And it gets worse.
For candidates, this means huge rejection rates before they’ve had any chance to demonstrate their unique blend of skills, enthusiasm and ability to contribute value. This results in candidates getting interviews mostly from employers that are drastically under-resourced and desperate; generally, the same employers that write “Salary: £competitive” in their ads.
Recruitment should be a “people first” business, yet this approach is anything but. We saw this glaring gap in the market, so in 2023 we formed Verde to plug it.
I’m Aran, one of the Directors here at Verde. After a 10-year career in an ecology consultancy, I saw an opportunity to disrupt the mainstream and create a new style of agency with an authentic, people-first approach.

Our founding principle is that to recruit for the job, you need to have done the job.
Before setting up Verde, after a stint as a tree surgeon, I worked in consultancy for almost a decade; rising from arboricultural surveyor to consultant to eventually helping manage a team as a principal arboriculturist in a national firm.
I know what it’s like to work in a corporate environment and in a smaller business. I know what it’s like to be autonomous and what it’s like to lead a team. I know a great opportunity to match a candidate with a role when I see it, and I can spot a red flag a mile off.
